Italy has officially banned overhead locker usage on flights amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Authorities in the country have announced that such facilities are now out of use on all flights - both domestic and international, as reported by the Express.

The policy has been introduced for "health reasons" and means that passengers may only bring small bags that can fit under the cabin seat in front of them.

The news comes after our own Department for Transport (DfT) advised passengers to limit hand luggage.

This would reduce the potential spread of the virus by minimising congestion near overhead lockers on board, for example.

So aside from overhead lockers being banned on flights to Italy, what are airline's current baggage policies?

We've pulled together the latest information - though this is subject to change.

Ryanair

Ryanair has revealed its baggage policy

Hand luggage is not only allowed on Ryanair flights, but it's also actively encouraged by the budget airline.

The travel provider has suggested that checked-in bags "significantly increase the risk" of coronavirus as they pass through eight different sets of hands - unlike hand luggage which remains with the traveller.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has himself recommended customers "minimise checked in luggage," as reported by the Mirror.

The airline is therefore promoting the use of hand luggage, as opposed to checked-in bags - despite aviation industry advice.

All passenger fares types with Ryanair include a small personal bag, which must fit underneath the cabin seat in front - with the maximum dimensions stated as 40x20x25cm.

Additional hand luggage, for 10kg bags, can be purchased for up to £20 but must be no larger than 55x40x20cm.

Checked-in bags are instead priced by Ryanair from £25 for luggage of 20kg.

British Airways

British Airways has confirmed that there are no changes to its baggage policy.

This currently permits one person item - such as a handbag or laptop bag - which should weigh no more than 23kg and must not exceed 40 x 30 x 15cm in dimensions.

Passengers are also allowed an additional cabin bag each, which should be under 24kg and up to 56 x 45 x 25cm in size.

Any checked baggage should be no larger than 90 x 75 x 43cm - including handles and wheels - with passengers typically entitled to one or two checked-in bags depending on the flight.

Extra and overweight luggage is charged by British Airways, with a price calculator available on its website.

EasyJet

Easyjet is allowing hand luggage

EasyJet is allowing customers to bring hand luggage onboard, though some restrictions do apply.

The airline states that only one bag is permitted per passenger and this must be no bigger than 56x45x25cm - including any handles and wheels.

The news was confirmed in a statement to the Independent recently, with a spokesperson commenting: "We are allowing passengers to bring hand luggage on board but asking them to try and minimise this."

Checked-in baggage costs vary depending on the weight and route, ranging from around £7 to £50.

TUI

TUI passengers are able to bring one piece of hang luggage on flights, though there are some restrictions.

The bag should not exceed 10kg in weight and must have dimensions that are no bigger than 55x40x20cm.

Personal items, such as laptops and handbags, "must fit within the one piece of hand luggage."

Those with a holiday package are entitled to up to a 20kg luggage allowance though this may vary.

Jet2

Jet2 will resume flights next month

Passengers on Jet2 flights can carry one piece of hand luggage on board free of charge.

The bag should weigh no more than 10kg and must be no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles.

The airline also permits passengers to bring a small, personal item with them - such as a handbag or laptop bag - as long as it's placed underneath the seat in front of them.

Jet2's checked baggage policy allows up to 22kg per passenger, with prices varying depending on the flight.
