Warren Crossan: Organised crime links to killing 'not ruled out'

A man shot dead in west Belfast on Saturday was Warren Crossan, police have confirmed.

Mr Crossan, 28, was shot a number of times in Rodney Parade off the Lower Falls Road.

The PSNI said they have not established a motive for the killing, but have not ruled out organised crime links.

He was the son of a well-known dissident republican Tommy Crossan, who was shot dead on the Springfield Road, Belfast, in 2014.

Warren Crossan was previously arrested and questioned about the murder of Robbie Lawlor, a Dublin criminal, was shot dead in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast in April.

'Callous and reckless'

Police said Mr Crossan was chased from the junction of Rodney Parade and St James's Road along Rodney Parade by two masked gunmen. He was shot a number of times at close range in St Katharine's Road.

On Sunday, Det Ch Insp Darren McCartney described it as "callous and reckless" with "no concern for the public", and that one gunshot struck a resident's vehicle.

The police said they were interested in the victim's movement prior to the shooting.

Det Ch Insp McCartney said Mr Crossan left his home in the Crumlin area shortly before 11:00 BST iLinkn a dark metallic blue Skoda Octavia.  

He was next observed parking the vehicle at the family home in Rodney Parade at approximately 12:40 BST.

The officer added: "I am aware the area was busy with pedestrians and motorists so I am asking anyone who may have captured any footage of the incident to please make that available to us also."

Police have made the Major Incident Public Portal available for anyone with information.

The dead man had been known to police and the BBC understands that he was believed to have been a well-known dissident republican.
