Airdrie fire: Body found in partially collapsed house

A body has been found after fire partially destroyed a house in North Lanarkshire.

Police said the body was discovered in the property on Ewart Drive in Airdrie following the fire at about 03:05 on Saturday.

At the time, the blaze resulted in the evacuation of eight nearby houses.

Police said the fire was not currently being treated as suspicious and a full investigation into its cause was ongoing.

Fire crews remained at the scene more than 24 hours after the alarm was raised while investigations were carried out.

Police said formal identification of the body was still to take place.

Det Sgt Mark Nelson said: "A joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire is still ongoing.

"Emergency services are also continuing efforts to ensure the safety of the damaged house and the surrounding properties."
