Amazon said that it is providing nearly 20,000 ‘seasonal’ or temporary jobs in its customer service (CS) organization to cater to the expected demand in customer traffic in the coming six months.

Amazon India had recently announced plans to have 50,000 temporary jobs in its fulfilment and delivery network.

More than a month after e-commerce company Amazon India announced plans to hire people for 50,000 temporary jobs in its fulfilment and delivery network, the company now has positions available in its customer service segment as well. Amazon, on Sunday, said that it is providing nearly 20,000 ‘seasonal’ or temporary jobs in its customer service (CS) organization to cater to the expected demand in customer traffic in the coming six months, PTI reported citing a company statement. The new temporary employment opportunity is available in Hyderabad, Pune, Coimbatore, Noida, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mangaluru, Indore, Bhopal and Lucknow.

Majority of the temporary vacancies are part of Amazon’s ‘Virtual Customer Service’ programme giving work-from-home options. The new positions will have associates resolving customer queries through e-mail, chat, social media and phone. The eligibility criteria for these positions would be 12th standard pass and proficiency in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Kannada. However, depending on the employee’s performance as well as business needs, a percentage of the temporary positions may be absorbed as permanent positions in Amazon towards the end of this year, according to the company. The hiring is in line with Amazon’s estimate that “customer traffic will further scale up over the next six months with the onset of Indian and global holiday seasons,” said Akshay Prabhu, Amazon India Director (Customer Service).

Amazon had last month said that it has decided to hire nearly 50,000 people in temporary jobs to meet the surge in demand from people relying on Amazon’s service, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public. The positions will be across fulfilment centres and delivery networks including part-time flexible work opportunities as independent contractors with Amazon Flex. Amazon had earlier this month expanded its Flex Delivery to 35 more cities, in turn, creating more jobs for those looking for part-time employment by delivering Amazon packages. Individuals would be able to earn “Rs 120 to Rs 140 per hour”. Earlier this year, Amazon had announced plans to create 1 million jobs in India by 2025.
