MADURAI: All roads, streets and junctions in Madurai city wore a deserted look on Sunday as people stayed indoors due to a complete lockdown meant to combat increasing Covid-19 cases.
With no relaxation given, all the shops and markets remained closed. But milk booths and medical shops were open.
A weeklong intense lockdown has been in force in city since Wednesday. The government announced that it would be a complete lockdown on Sunday.
People used to move around in the mornings for the purchase of essentials on other days. But hardly any vehicles of the public were found on roads on Sunday morning.
A few people who were commuting were into essential services like health care and government departments.
Police deployments were made at junctions and on main roads to ensure unwanted movement. Police did not have much work to do as people preferred to stay indoors.
People purchased things required for Sunday well in advance. Meat shops were busy on Saturday.
