India keeps vigilant eye on Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir as Chinese air activity increases

  • India is keeping a vigilant eye on airbases in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) after a Chinese refueller aircraft landed in Skardu last week. Also, Chinese air activity has increased opposite Eastern Ladakh, raising the possibility of PLA Air Force (PLAAF) using airbases in PoK.
  • Indian and Chinese forces are in the middle of an escalating standoff in Eastern Ladakh with New Delhi forced to bring in a large number of troops in the area after Beijing amassed forces, which were otherwise supposed to be undergoing annual military exercises.
  • The Indian Air Force has been on heightened alert for several weeks now and extensive ferry missions have been undertaken to take supplies and troops to Ladakh. Besides, Chinese air activity – additional Su 27 fighters are believed to have been deployed at Hotan airbase in Xinjiang – is being closely monitored and their deployments mirrored on the Indian side.

  • India is keeping a close watch on China’s military mobilisation in the Depsang Plains region, a major hotspot after Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley and Hot Springs areas, which can conceivably threaten a vast swathe of Indian territory in north-eastern Ladakh. Army chief General M M Naravane, during his trip to forward areas of eastern Ladakh over the last couple of days, directed further strengthening of patrolling to the 65 points on the Line of Actual Control to plug all gaps, while reviewing the operational situation in all sectors from Daulat Beg Oldie-Depsang in the north to Demchok-Chumar in the south.

US agrees to launch dialogues with EU on threats posed by China

  • The United States and the European Union have agreed to launch a dialogue on China to address the threats of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said.
  • Pompeo made the remarks during the Brussels Forum in a discussion with the German Marshal Fund.
  • "Enjoyed the discussions today at the German Marshall Fund's #BrusselsForum. I am excited to announce the U.S. and EU are launching a dialogue on China to address the threats the CCP poses to our common values and way of life," tweeted Pompeo on Friday
  • Last week, European Union chief diplomat Josep Borrell has called for talks between Europe and the United States aimed at forging a common transatlantic front against China.

  • Congress on Friday accused the BJP of engaging in "diversionary tactics" on the issue of Chinese incursions and restoration of status quo ante goes.
  • "To suppress the facts, BJP President JP Nadda, Modi Government and their puppet allies in the media have unleashed a diabolical design of disinformation, distraction and diversion from the real issue of Chinese incursions and restoration of status quo ante, which is the solemn duty of the Modi Government," Surjewala said in a statement.
  • Surjewala further accused the union government of misleading the nation on the issue of Chinese transgressions.

Indian-American Congressman concerned over Chinese aggression against India

  • Indian-American Congressman Dr Ami Bera on Friday expressed concern over the Chinese aggression along its India border and asked Beijing to use diplomatic mechanisms rather than force to settle boundary issues with the neighbouring country. His comments came amid a border standoff between Indian and Chinese militaries.
  • The two sides are engaged in diplomatic and military talks amidst escalating tension following the violent clashes in Galwan Valley on June 15. Twenty Indian Army personnel were killed in the clash.
  • “I encourage China to use its longstanding diplomatic mechanisms with India to deescalate the situation rather than force to settle boundary issues,” Bera, the longest-serving Indian American in House of Representatives, said in a tweet.

  • The Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Embassies have briefed key world capitals on situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and India’s active role in maintaining peace amid China refusing to restore status quo despite several rounds of negotiations.
  • Delhi has also informed various foreign interlocutors that respecting and strictly observing the Line of Actual Control is the basis for peace and tranquillity in the border areas. The Indian Army has been patrolling all along the LAC, including in the Galwan Valley, for a long time. All infrastructure built by the Indian side has always been on its own side of the LAC, the MEA told various key partners for India.

  • The Army has shared its ground assessment in eastern Ladakh where thousands of troops have been in a stand off with China since early May and has told the government what equipment would be required on an urgent basis if the situation prolongs for the long haul.
  • Army chief MM Naravane briefed defence minister Rajnath Singh on the ground situation in eastern Ladakh on his return from a two-day visit to the region on Friday. Sources said that the Army is extremely cautious on whether movements on the ground match the bilateral talks being undertaken to resolve the situation. Also, the stand off is expected to be a prolonged affair as the Chinese side has dug in strongly at several locations along the LAC, besides having reinforcements in the rear.
