Guwahati woman killed after wall collapses in landslides

Incessant rain has led to waterlogging and landslides in Assam.
GUWAHATI: A woman, identified as Usha Bora, 72, died in landslides triggered by incessant rainfall at Kahilipara power house in the city on Thursday.
The mudslide hit around 7 am and resulted in the collapse of the guard wall near the house of Bora, affecting six people of two families. Three people - Golapi Kalita, Bharat Kalita and a 19-year girl - were injured. Bora was taken to the Hayat Hospital here immediately but declared dead at 11.55 am.
NDRF officials said,"A guard wall gave away as a result of landslides. The wall of the house was completely damaged due to landslides."
Meanwhile, almost after six hours of struggle, one person, identified as Bharat Kalita, 40, was rescued jointly by SDRF and NDRF team after he was trapped under debris following the landslides that damaged the house he was living at Kahilipara.
"The victim's lower extremities was trapped under a heavy concrete boulder. But he was given assurance and immediately administered oxygen and intravenous fluid by the NDRF doctor. The heavy boulder under which the victim was trapped was slowly and carefully chipped off so that the victim could be freed without injury," the official said.
The NDRF rescuers finally succeeded in creating a gap and freed the lower extremities of the trapped victim. Kalita was immediately evacuated and taken to Hayat Hospital in Guwahati.
Landslides were also reported near Joyguru, Gouripur on NH-2. Traffic was diverted and those heading to lower Assam districts were asked to take the Hajo-Nalbari road. Similar landslides were also reported at Maligaon and Bamunimaidan in the city.
