SHIMLA: Former chief parliamentary secretary and Congress leader Neeraj Bharti, who was under investigation in a sedition case, was on Friday arrested by the CID crime branch of Shimla.
Bharti had posted some comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and made some observations about the recent face-off between India and China at Galwan Valley in Ladakh in social media, after which a complaint was lodged against him.
A senior police officer said Bharti was summoned for examination at CID crime branch police station on June 24 and was examined for three consecutive days till Friday.
“A case against Bharti was registered on June 20 on the complaint of an advocate Narender Guleria, who had alleged that Bharti posted anti-national and objectionable materials in social media. He has been arrested for investigation purposes. He will be produced before CJM court on Saturday,” he said.
Bharti was booked under sections 124-A (sedition), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence. language, etc.), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC at CID crime police station at Bharai in Shimla on June 20.
The former Congress MLA joined the police investigation on Wednesday. He had reached the police station accompanied by around 20 supporters in seven cars. He was also called on Thursday and Friday.
Neeraj Bharti was chief parliamentary secretary (education) in the previous Congress regime headed by Virbhadra Singh. He hails from Jawali in Kangra district and is the son of senior Congress leader and former MP Chaudhary Chander Kumar.
In his complaint, the Shimla-based advocate had stated that the Congress leader had posted comments on social media to spread ignominy, hatred, contempt and unpleasantness against the government among people of the country. Guleria had alleged that Bharti through his propaganda on social media had created the atmosphere of anger and resentment among the general public.
