Pune: 5 new scholarship schemes introduced by SPPU to benefit 15 thousand students

The Rs 61-crore deficit budget includes five new scholarship schemes along with the provision of Rs 10 lakh for the Kashmir-Leh-Ladakh Educational Project.

 

Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University in its annual budget for 2020-21, has made a provision of Rs 9 crore to start five new scholarship schemes which will benefit 15 thousand students. Although the budget of the university was prepared before the COVID-19 outbreak hit the country, certain provisions for online education are proposed to be made in it through a supplementary budget.

In a meeting under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Dr Nitin Karmalkar, Management Council member Rajesh Pande presented the budget which was approved after discussion by other members. The Rs 61-crore deficit budget includes five new scholarship schemes along with the provision of Rs 10 lakh for the Kashmir-Leh-Ladakh Educational Project.

Dr Karmalkar said, "This budget was prepared before the COVID-19 pandemic hit us. It will have to be revised. Due to COVID-19 situation, we will have to provide online education. Appropriate provisions will be made for it through a supplementary budget."

About the new scholarship schemes 

The university has launched five new scholarship schemes and has made a provision of Rs 9 crore for it. These schemes are expected to benefit 15 thousand candidates.

Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Financial Assistance Scheme has a provision of Rs 1 crore and will benefit 1955 students.

The Anna Bhau Sathe Scholarship Scheme also has the provision of Rs 1 crore and will benefit 2822 students. 

Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj and Mahatma Jotiba Phule Scheme has provision for Rs 2 crore each and will benefit two thousand students each. 

Out of these 8777 students benefiting from the schemes, 5739 students will get a degree and 3028 students will get post-graduation education. Also for the Swami Vivekanand Scholarship Scheme, a provision of Rs 3.15 crore has been made through which 7000 candidates will benefit.

61 crore deficit

The university had Rs 595 crore revenue in the year 2020-2021 while it spent Rs 656 crore in the same year. This led to a deficit of Rs 61 crore in the budget.

* University facilities - Rs 4.16 lakh

* Students Projects - Rs 21.87 lakh

* Quality Improvement programs - Rs 13.20 lakh

* Samarth Bharat Abhiyan - Rs 1.5 crore

* Disaster Management Training - Rs 2 crore
