Clearance of all import consignments from China has been stopped from 4 pm on Friday by the Chennai Customs department. This is for cargo that arrived via both sea and air routes.

When the issue was flagged by the trade, the Customs department replied that there are many system issues and the department was looking into them, sources said. This is the second such stoppage in the last four days. In the first instance, the non-clearance from Monday night was over ‘suspicion’. But the department started releasing the cargo from the next day, said sources. Nearly 30 per cent of cargo imports handled in Chennai comes from China.
