AURANGABAD: A 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his 16-year-old sister for being in a relationship with a village youth against the family's wishes, in Dhamangaon in Deglur taluka of the Nanded district.
The Nanded police, who termed it a case of honour killing, had recovered the girl's battered body which was half eaten by animals, including dogs and foxes, on June 22.
After the recovery of Kalpana Suryavanshi's body, her mother had named the 20-year-old youth as the murder suspect, stating that he and her daughter were in a relationship for over two years. The police had picked up the youth for questioning.
"However, we suspected that someone from the family might be involved in the murder because the family had not lodged a complaint even after the girl went missing on June 20," inspector Dwarkadas Chikhlikar of the Nanded police crime branch told TOI on Thursday.
Lonikar said, "We waited till the girl's last rites were over. After a thorough investigation, we arrested her brother, Anil Suryavanshi, on Wednesday. He has confessed to the crime. He was produced in court and remanded in police custody till June 30. It is indeed a case of honour killing."
