Coronavirus roundup: Developments in India and rest of the world
NEW DELHI: The total number of coronavirus cases in India neared the 4,00,000-mark with the biggest single-day tally of 17,000 cases on Friday. Elsewhere in the world, the situation remained grim, especially in the US, where a new surge in the number of Covid cases has forced the government to rethink its strategy.

INDIA
- The highest single-day surge in Covid-19 cases went past 17,000 on Friday, pushing India's tally to 4,90,401, while the death toll climbed to 15,301 with 407 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
- The recovered cases have exceeded the active cases by 96,173. During the last 24 hours, a total of 13,940 Covid-19 patients have been cured, taking the cumulative figure to 2,85,636. This has led to the recovery rate reaching 58.24%.
- The scheduled International commercial passenger services to/from India shall remain suspended till 15th July.
- CBSE and ICSE both assured the SC that results will be declared by July 15.
- Marks for the pending class 10, 12 exams, which have been cancelled in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, will be awarded on basis of marks scored by a student in his or her best performing subjects, according to CBSE's four-point assessment scheme.
- Indian Council of Medical Research has inducted 11 new labs in the last 24 hours. India now has 1016 diagnostic labs dedicated to Covid-19. During the past 24 hours, 2,15,446 tests have been conducted. The total number of samples tested, as on date, is 77,76,228.
- Congress leader and party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi has home quarantined himself after testing positive for Covid-19, sources close to him said on Friday. His wife has also tested positive for the virus.

- Shopping malls in Gurugram will reopen from next week, three months after they were closed because of the nationwide lockdown enforced in wake of coronavirus spread
- PM Narendra Modi launched the Atma Nirbhar Uttar Pradesh Rojgar Abhiyan through video conferencing in the presence of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. In Uttar Pradesh, nearly 30 lakh migrant workers returned to their native districts following the loss of livelihood in metropolis due to Covid-19 lockdown.

- Showering praise on Yogi Adityanath for his handling of Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the vast preparations made by the Uttar Pradesh chief minister saved at least 85,000 lives, something that was unthinkable before 2017.
- In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that night curfew will remain in force between 10 pm and 5 am, instead of current 9 pm to 5 am, during the extended coronavirus lockdown till July 31.
- More than 1,000 doctors, nurses and paramedic staff from ITBP and other Central armed police forces as well as an additional 1,000 paramedical, assistant and security staff shall be deployed at the 10,000-bed Covid care centre ready to be functional at the Radha Soami Beas facility at Chhatarpur.
- In Tamil Nadu, capital Chennai is under an intense 12-day lockdown from June 19. It has reported over 700 deaths so far.
- The Assam government announced a 12-hour night curfew across the state from Friday and a 14-day complete lockdown in Kamrup (Metro) district, of which Guwahati city is a part, from June 28.

- The World Health Organization said that a global initiative to speed up the development and production of Covid-19 tests, vaccines and treatments will require more than $30 billion over the next year.
- US officials estimate that 20 million Americans have been infected with the coronavirus since it first arrived in the United States, meaning that the vast majority of the population remains susceptible. Thursday's estimate is roughly 10 times as many infections as the 2.3 million cases that have been confirmed.
- Pakistan on Friday recorded its lowest single-day spike in coronavirus cases in about a month after 2,775 people tested positive for the infection, taking the national tally to 195,745.
- China reported a further decline in newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Friday, with 13 cases. Eleven were in Beijing, where mass testing has been carried out following an outbreak that appears to have been largely brought under control.
- The coronavirus crisis deepened in Arizona on Thursday, and the governor of Texas began to backtrack after making one of the most aggressive pushes in the nation to reopen, as the daily number of confirmed cases across the US closed in on the peak reached during the dark days of late April.
- Sweden's chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell has lashed out at the World Health Organization, calling it ``a total mistake'' to put his nation on a list of countries where ``accelerated transmission'' could overwhelm health systems. Tegnell told Swedish radio on Friday: ``This is, unfortunately, a total misjudgment of the Swedish data.''
- Tokyo has confirmed 54 new cases of the coronavirus, with the number staying at its highest since early May.
- Japan lifted a seven-week pandemic state emergency in late May, and social and business activity has since largely resumed.
