A 94-year old man from Kolkata has become the oldest person to beat Covid-19 and recover from the disease in West Bengal. After spending a fortnight in hospital, Lal Mohan Seth, a resident of Maniktala in north Kolkata, was discharged from the Calcutta Medical College (CMC) hospital on Thursday.

On June 9, he was admitted at CMC, a dedicated Covid-19 hospital, with fever, acute respiratory distress and hypoxia. His Covid-19 test report came positive on June 13.

According to Dr Indranil Biswas, medical superintendent at CMC, Seth had a good immune system, despite his advanced age, which helped him recover fast.

"He came in with breathing problems. We had to administer oxygen but he did not require ventilator support. He had co-morbid conditions like hypertension and we had to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance. Slowly he began showing signs of recovery and could breathe without oxygen support," Dr Biwas told India Today TV.

A father of five, the 94-year-old businessman was initially hesitant to get admitted at the hospital. His family today says they are happy with the treatment he received at CMC.

Meanwhile, on Thursday when Seth was discharged, doctors and nurses at the hospital gathered in the lobby to see him off. He was given flowers and a health drink as a parting gift by the hospital staff.

Trinamool Congress MLA Dr Nirmal Maji, chairman of Patient Welfare Committee at CMC, lauded the doctors' and other medical staff for their effort.

"So far 1,538 Covid-19 patients have been admitted at CMC. Of these, 941 have fully recovered and were discharged," Maji said.
