Skies open up, rainy spell likely till Sunday in Uttar Pradesh

Traffic as usual on a rain-washed road in the city on Thursday
LUCKNOW: A day after making a quiet entry into the city, the monsoon gained momentum on Thursday. Widespread moderate rainfall was recorded across the state capital and similar conditions are expected to continue till Sunday.
It started raining in the morning and intermittent drizzle continued all day. The state met observatory recorded 33.4 mm rainfall, while maximum and minimum temperatures were 27.4 and 21.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Relative humidity was high but cloudy sky and moist winds kept the weather pleasant. State met officials said the monsoon trough - an extended low pressure area - was passing over the state. Several cyclonic circulations are also hovering over UP and adjoining states.
Since these factors would be in play, widespread light to moderate rains are expected in many parts of the state including till Sunday. Rainfall can be heavy at isolated places, the officials said.
This year, monsoon arrived five days behind the normal date in the city.
