Protesting against the hike in fuel prices at a time when people are facing financial crisis in view of COVID-19 pandemic, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has demanded that the state government waive off the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel.

Congress workers protested against the hike in fuel prices in a unique way by pulling a four wheeler using a rope.

GPCC vice president Sankalp Amonkar said that the central government has increased the fuel prices for the 17th day in a row that took the cumulative increase to a steep Rs 8.5 and Rs 10.01 per litre for the petrol and diesel respectively. He said that the people in Goa have suffered a lot due to hike in fuel prices.

“The state government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should walk on the footsteps of the former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who had taken a bold decision to keep a check on prices of fuel by deducting the VAT,” said Amonkar.

“The government should look into the issue on humanitarian grounds and see to it that VAT on fuel is withdrawn,” he said.

He also appealed to the BJP legislators in Mormugao taluka to rise to the occasion and assist the people who are in duress due to the COVID-19 crisis.
