Mangaluru: In-patient service to resume at Wenlock Hospital soon

MANGALURU: District Minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari said that inpatient service will soon begin at the district Wenlock hospital. The minister who chaired a meeting to review the Covid-19 cases in the district on Friday said, the moment the district Wenlock hospital was declared as the designated Covid19 hospital in March, other services at the hospital were stopped. On realising that people are finding it difficult and are demanding for services, the administration recently launched the Out-Patient department services. Every day, the hospital is receiving about 250 patients at its OPD. Hence a decision will soon be taken to launch an in-patient service for 100 patients.
Providing an update on the Covid-19 cases in the district, the minister said, currently there are 142 active cases, 370 people were discharged and 10 deaths were reported. For Covid-19 testing, the district has four private and one government lab.
Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said that private hospitals can admit patients directly but the medical expenses will be borne by the patients. Patients being treated under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme can be treated at a private hospital, with a recommendation from the district health and family welfare department.
District health and family welfare officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy said private medical colleges have come forward to treat Covid patients. With this, 800 beds for treatment of Covid patients will be available at private medical colleges, in addition to private hospitals treating Covid patients. Out of the total Covid cases in the district, 295 cases are those with an international and 130 are with interstate travel history, he added.
Dr Sadashiva, district surgeon and superintendent, said among Covid patients being treated, five are critical.
