Phelan, 45, was charged on Monday night over an alleged domestic violence incident with his girlfriend, 44-year-old ballet instructor Chelsea Franklin, at their home in Frenchs Forest in Sydney's northern beaches.

Hours before he was charged with the alleged assault, the television presenter arrived for his final week at work as though nothing was amiss.

Phelan presented alongside Obermeder for The Daily Edition, before filling in for Mel McLaughlin on the 6pm sport bulletin.

The first time bosses at Channel Seven learned of the alleged altercation was when a reporter called asking for further information about Phelan's arrest, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Sally addressed Phelan's absence with viewers on Tuesday, saying: 'Before we go on, I want to address Ryan Phelan's absence from the program.'

'The network was unaware of these allegations until notified last night... Ryan will not be returning to The Daily Edition due to the serious allegations made against him.'

Last Friday, Channel Seven announced The Daily Edition has been axed after seven years on air.

Seven Director of News and Public Affairs Craig McPherson said in a statement: 'The Daily Edition found its way onto the TV landscape seven years ago and has performed exceptionally over that time.'

'Sadly though, the economics of today and associated cost pressures across the entire industry has led to this decision.

'I want to thank co-hosts Sally Obermeder and Ryan Phelan and the talented production team for all their efforts.'

Further, McPherson attributed the cancellation to 'these difficult times' in reference the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Daily Edition, which has been on the air since 2013, had received steady ratings during its time on air.

It boasted a weekday average audience of 176,000 viewers nationally in recent years, and aired between 2 pm and 3 pm weekdays.

Sally had been hosting The Daily Edition since its inception in 2013, while Ryan joined the program in 2016.

The show featured a combination of live breaking news, as well as interviews with celebrities and entertainment updates.
