  • Mediclinic SA says it regrettably learnt about an alleged incident between Tshwane metro police and a Mediclinic doctor.
  • Dr Emmanuel Taban is still consulting with his attorney on what his options are legally.
  • The metro police said the investigation into the matter is continuing.

Mediclinic Southern Africa says it has learnt with regret about an alleged incident on Saturday between one of their doctors, Dr Emmanuel Taban, and Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officials.

"Mediclinic is not privy to the details of this matter and as such cannot provide further comment.

"However, in principle Mediclinic always supports the fair and equitable rule of law. Mediclinic strongly objects to any harassment, assault and use of undue force based on any form of prejudice, regardless of motivation," Mediclinic Southern Africa said in a statement sent to News24 on Friday.

Taban, a seasoned pulmonologist who has been working around the clock to help combat Covid-19, had allegedly been throttled and assaulted by TMPD officers.

News24 earlier reported Taban and his wife, a physiotherapist, claimed unidentified officers harassed, assaulted and even throttled Taban until he passed out on the R54 on Saturday afternoon. They both work at Midstream Mediclinic in Tshwane.

Taban claimed he was on his way to work to assist Covid-19 patients when he was allegedly harassed by several officers, who were unidentifiable. He said his troubles began after he overtook a truck.

Taban told News24 he is still considering his options with the assistance of his attorney and he would have an update on Monday.

TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba told News24 on Friday "the investigation is continuing".
