Coronavirus India Updates: Tally Tops 4.7 Lakh; Delhi Now The Indian City With Highest Cases

Over 4.7 lakh people have been infected by the deadly Covid-19 virus in India, as new cases poured in from across the country taking the figure to a new high.

The country added nearly 17,000 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total tally to 4,73,105, according to Health Ministry’s 8 a.m update on June 25. However, over 2.7 lakh of these cases have been declared as “cured/discharged”.

Authorities reported 16,922 new cases, 418 deaths and 13,012 recoveries in the 24 hours preceding the update.

Delhi now has the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in India, surpassing Mumbai, as the pace of transmission spirals in the national capital.

New Delhi added 3,788 new cases on Wednesday, taking the total count to 70,390, according to the local government’s health bulletin. Mumbai—India’s largest Covid-19 hotspot till now—has reported 69,258 cases.

Global Updates

Signs of a worsening outbreak across the U.S. rattled markets, with states including Florida, California and Texas setting daily records for infections. Australia’s Victoria state has recorded 33 new cases in 24 hours.

Health leaders called on the U.K. to prepare for a possible second wave, while the World Health Organization warned of rising number of cases in Latin America.

Globally, total cases exceeded 9.4 million while deaths passed 482,000.
