BENGALURU: A day after the Union Cabinet cleared the setting up of IN-SPACE (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), a new board that provide private players a level playing field, Isro chairman K Sivan said that the body will also perform the role of a regulator and will have on its board members from the private industry.
“IN-SPACE will be a separate vertical within the Department of Space (DoS) that will make independent decisions for permitting and regulating activities of the private sector. It will have its own legal, technological, activity promotion and monitoring directorates and its Board will comprise members from the private industry, academia and government of India,” Sivan said.
He said that the new Centre will act as a national nodal agency for hand-holding and promoting private industry in the space sector and will even help private players build facilities within DoS premises.
“They can directly apply to IN-SPACE which will evaluate and process…Once IN-SPACE gives a decision, it will be binding on Isro and the private players. It will take about three to six months for this mechanism to become operational, but the industry need not wait that long. They can approach DoS right away and be assured that their proposals will be processed in a fast track manner,” Sivan added.
Terming the establishment of IN-SPACE as a major reform, he said this would promote private players in end-to-end space services, including building and launching rockets and satellites and providing space-based services commercially.
“So far Isor has been doing all of this...Opening up of the space sector means the potential of the entire country can be leveraged. This will not only result in an accelerated growth of the sector but also enable India to generate large scale employment in the technology sector,” Sivan added
