PG doctors treating Covid-19 patients test positive in Mangaluru

MANGALURU/UDUPI: Five post-graduate doctors of Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru on Covid-19 duty at the Lady Goschen Hospital and District Wenlock Hospital are among the 43 coronavirus positive cases that Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts reported on Thursday. Dakshina Kannada accounted for 29 of 43 cases taking the total positive cases to 484. The 14 cases in Udupi took the tally of total positive cases to 1116.
A statement from the college stated that all five PG doctors tested positive are asymptomatic and are being treated at the designated Covid Hospital in the city. Their health is stable. The contact tracing has been done and all their contacts are being quarantined as per government guidelines. The areas where these doctors worked have also been sanitised. The doctors with signs of flu got themselves tested only to be diagnosed positive.
Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said P-10274, a 68-year-old woman who succumbed to the pandemic on Wednesday was diagnosed with severe acute respiratory infection. She was admitted to a private hospital on June 22 with complaints of abdominal pain and breathlessness and shifted to the Covid hospital. She was also suffering from hypertension, diabetes and hypothyroidism and died on June 24.
District Health authorities discharged 43 patients during the day and overall discharge to 344, leaving the active cases at 140. Nineteen of the 29 cases were reported in those who returned from Saudi Arabia, Sharjah, Muscat and Qatar, one was a case of influenza like illness, one a case of SARI, one from outside the state and six persons the primary contacts of P-5988 and P-9589 and the source of the last case (P-10298) is being traced.
In Udupi, 10 of the 14 cases were reported from those who returned from Maharashtra and contacts of four patients are being traced. Authorities in Udupi have discharged 1020 patients thus far and there are 94 active cases as on date. Reports on 388 samples are awaited, deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said. Udupi still is third in the state with total reported positive cases behind Bengaluru Urban (1791) and Kalaburagi (1289) respectively.
