Coronavirus: Chennai Corporation commissioner explains how conservancy workers are protected from Covid-19

Conservancy workers in Chennai
CHENNAI: Residents can learn from the experience of Greater Chennai Corporation’s field level workers on wearing personal protective equipment, eating a healthy diet and taking vitamin supplements which helps avoid and battle Covid-19, GCC commissioner G Prakash said.
“Of the 20,000 field level workers, only 120 have tested positive. We provide disposable masks during roll call every morning, ensure that they eat a good diet and also take supplements. This is a successful model which should be followed by others,” Prakash said at a press meet on Thursday.
Across the civic body, only 345 employees had tested positive and 50 of them had returned for work, Prakash said. “They include PRO Umapathi” he said.
The civic body ran 95 buses on 49 routes to transport conservancy workers during the lockdown days, Prakash said.
Regular health check-ups were conducted for the conservancy workers, on a turn basis. “We tested those who showed symptoms, as per protocol,” he said.
