BENGALURU: A 30-year-old
man accused of attempt to murder, and infected with coronavirus, sent police into a tizzy after he fled a designated
Covid-19 hospital in the city on Wednesday morning. He was caught about seven hours later after his friend - whom he had called to buy him liquor - tipped off police.
The accused was arrested on Friday for allegedly stabbing a friend in DJ Halli. As per protocol, police made him undergo Covid-19 tests. On Tuesday evening, results confirmed that he was Covid-positive. He was immediately shifted to Victoria Hospital and police officials who arrested him were put under quarantine.
Sources said the accused injured his hand in the ward on Wednesday morning and nurses took him out to treat the wound. Around 10.15am, he pushed the security guard and nurses aside, abused them and made a dash for the exit. The guard, who was wearing a PPE suit, was unable to give chase. Dr Smitha Segu, nodal officer of the Covid-19 core committee in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, told TOI that the man scaled the gate of Victoria Hospital and fled.

Police alerted the ambulance service and as the acccused reached Pushpanjali theatre, near KR Puram railway station, cordoned off the area. They convinced the accused and he stepped into the ambulance which arrived at 5.45pm.
VV Puram police said they have registered a case against the accused. He told police that he was addicted to alcohol and fled the hospital only to have a drink. While a policeman is deployed at the ward of the accused in hospital, the 30-year-old made his escape when being shifted to another wing. The hospital security guard had been deployed to accompany him.
