KOLKATA: Nearly 59 personnel in Kolkata Police and 110 from other police forces across Bengal are now battling Covid-19.

According to joint CP (headquarters) Subhankar Sinha Roy, “Kolkata Police’s 345 personnel have been infected so far, of which 286 have recovered. This is nearly 83%.” A senior state police officer said, “In Bengal police, 221 personnel had tested Covid positive, of whom 111 have recovered.” According to the officer, most cases have been reported from Howrah (rural), Baruipur police district and Malda. On Tuesday, 27 cops had tested positive for Covid-19.
Senior officers, including IGPs and DIGs, are regularly reaching out to officers and personnel of all ranks who are working at the frontline. Vishal Garg, IG, North Bengal, visited Malda on Wednesday to boost the morale of the policemen there. Apart from spreading awareness about this virus, the IG also talked — via video calls — to infected policemen who are undergoing treatment in hospital.
In Kolkata, two police personnel lost their lives to Covid. “The state has already released the Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for them and the Kolkata Police has contributed another Rs 1 lakh,” the joint CP said.
To keep morale high, Kolkata Police commissioner Anuj Sharma, along with other senior officers, are touring various divisions and speaking to OCs and other personnel. The monthly crime conference is also being held across divisions now — the first one, on Monday, was attended by Sharma and other senior officers in the north division. Sharma will be visiting all nine police divisions and hold meetings with OCs, ACPs and juniors, especially those who have defeated Covid-19 and have returned to work.
A welfare officer has been appointed to report to special CP Jawed Shamim through the DCPs, joint CPs and additional CPs. The reports will include the health status of the family members of each policeman. It has also been decided that no officer above 55 will be assigned outdoor work where they have to tackle crowds. Each police station will also have to ensure that all outsiders sanitize their hands and feet before entering the building. Each senior officer has been asked to look after the health of all members of his or her unit, including timely quarantine and hospitalization.
The two deaths in Kolkata Police has spurred several units to introduce several new safety measures. For example, at Lake police station, anyone entering the premises must go through thorough disinfection, including cleaning shoes with a chemical. At a south suburban police station, each person must sanitize his or her seat after coming from outside. The traffic police personnel have said that several officers have switched to a healthy diet. They have been carrying home-cooked food and using certain immunity-boosting supplements recommended by their doctors.
