TRICHY: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Trichy set up an outpatient department for patients who suffer from symptoms of Covid-19.
On Wednesday night, MGMGH dean Dr K Vanitha announced that the facility was set up to face the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the district.
The ward is for all outpatients who visit the hospital with complaints of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), influenza-like illness (ILI) and fever. The objective of this initiative is to differentiate general patients from the ones suffering from symptoms of Covid-19.
“Earlier, patients visiting the OPD in MGMGH for non-communicable diseases like diabetes and others used to line up along with patients who had fever, cough and respiratory problems. We decided to keep the patients with Covid symptoms away and opened a separate ward from them,” said medical superintendent of the hospital Dr R Yeganathan.
As many as 400 to 500 patients queued up in the new OP block after the relaxation of lockdown. The numbers increase to 1,000 on Tuesdays and Thursdays as consultation for cardiology is held on those days.
