Two moderate earthquakes occurred within an hour with magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.5 on the Richter scale have jolted some parts of south-eastern district, Champhai in Mizoram at midnight.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the tremor of 4.2 occurred at 12.45 am and a tremor of 4.5 magnitude occurred at 1.14 am today.
The epicentre of the earthquakes was south of Champhai. There is noimmediate report of damage. According to the officials, the district has experienced a series of tremors during the last few days.
Local sources said that many residents of the district headquarters had a sleepless night during the last two days with a series of mild tremors, which are regarded as aftershocks of the Monday earthquake of
5.5 magnitude. Officials further said, a fact-finding team comprising geologists have reached Champhai to study the multiple aspects of the tremors.
