GREATER NOIDA: A 24-year-old man died and four others were injured after the i10 car in which they were returning from Haridwar to their hometown in Palwal crashed into a divider of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway near Dadri on Tuesday.
Police said the accident occurred around 6am when Praveen, who was driving the car, failed to negotiate a bend and the speeding vehicle crashed into the concrete wall. While Praveen died on the spot, the others are battling critical injuries.
Praveen was travelling with his friends Rahul, Bali, Virendra and Kuldeep, all residents of Palwal.
Dinesh Kumar, the station house officer of Dadri police station, said a patrolling team reached the spot soon after receiving information of the accident on their radio. “Prima facie, the driver failed to negotiate a curve on the road and crashed on to the divider. The impact was such that the iron grille on the divider broke. The driver was crushed between the dashboard and the seat. We had to cut open the vehicle to bring out his body. The other occupants were brought out and rushed to Naveen Hospital,” he added.
According to the officer, the group had gone to Haridwar for a one-day trip and was returning home when the accident occurred.
“The family members of the deceased man were inconsolable. They said the youths had made a plan to take a dip in the Ganga and had left home the previous day,” he added.
In another accident, a truck with five persons headed for Agra rammed into a stationary vehicle on the Yamuna Expressway in Rabupura. One of the travellers died in the accident, which occurred around 1am.
The driver fled the spot, leaving the two others injured inside the vehicle.
Rajesh Kumar Singh, DCP (zone 3), said the truck driver was speeding and failed to apply the brakes in time. “The accident took place because of speed. Whole one died, the others were injured. A police patrolling team rushed them to Kailash Hospital in Jewar, where one of them was declared dead on arrival. The driver fled the spot and the other two have been admitted in the ICU,” he added.
The deceased was identified as Sanket alias Ranjeet Yadav, a resident of Firozabad. Those injured were identified as Munna Lal, a resident of Gonda, and Babbu and Lalu, who are from Bahraich.
Police have seized the truck and lodged an FIR against the driver.
“An FIR under relevant sections of rash driving and negligence causing death has been registered against the driver. Once the injured persons are in a position to talk, we will question them about other details,” said Singh.
