A spike of as many as 16,922 new cases of novel coronavirus pushed India’s Covid tally to 4.73 lakh on Thursday morning.

According to the Union Health Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Covid-19 tally in India rose to 4,73,105. The combined tally includes 1,86,514 active cases, while 2,71,697 have recovered or discharged from hospitals.
Delhi has, meanwhile, surpassed Mumbai as the worst-hit city in the country. Of the four metropolitan cities, Delhi now has the highest number of cases. On Thursday, Delhi's coronavirus tally rose to over 70,390, surpassing Mumbai.

On Wednesday, 14,476 people tested positive for coronavirus in a single day, which took India's Covid-19 tally to 4,56,183 while the death toll rose neared 15,000 with 465 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
India is the fourth worst-hit nation by the pandemic after the US, Brazil and Russia. According to the Johns Hopkins University, which has been compiling COVID-19 data from all over the world, India is at the eighth position in terms of the death toll.
