Man arrested over alleged stabbing at coast food court
Police have arrested a man at the centre of an almost 48-hour search, sparked when a teenage girl was allegedly stabbed while attempting to break up a fight in a Sunshine Coast food court.
Emergency services were called to the Kawana Waters shopping centre about 4pm on Monday after reports of the incident.
A crime scene was declared after the incident and police patrolled the area into the night, but failed to find the 18-year-old or the alleged weapon.Credit:Google Street View
It will be alleged the fight began when two men — aged 18 and 17 — had a chance encounter after an argument on social media.
The 16-year-old-girl had tried to intervene when she was allegedly turned on and received the "significant knife wound" to her neck, Detective Sergeant Chris Eaton told reporters on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old suspect, whom police believed may have been at the centre with another girl or with a group, was allegedly seen leaving on foot.
In an update on Wednesday afternoon, police said ongoing investigations had led detectives to an address on Blaxland Street in Woodridge, south of Brisbane.
"An 18-year-old man was taken into custody just after midday," the police statement said. "He is currently assisting police with inquiries."
