sports briefs | Harry Kane could do better than playing for Tottenham, Nick Kyrgios needs to quieten down and there are worrying signs ahead of the proposed England v Pakistan series.
BUSTING OUT HIS KANE
Football pundit Paul Merson lit a little fuse under Jose Mourinho (which isn't hard to do) this week when he suggested that star striker Harry Kane would soon move to another club as he would struggle to be as prolific under Mourinho's defensive style of play. Mourinho took the bait, as expected, reeling off a list of strikers that have done well under him including Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Never ones to miss out on an opportunity to rail on Jose, we think Merson is right. Spurs are going backwards in a hurry and Kane, as one of the top strikers in the world, could certainly find a better home. Jose got the last laugh last night though, as Kane found himself on the scoresheet in Spurs' 2-0 home win over West Ham.
KYRGIOS THE JUDGE AND JURY
Nick Kyrgios, who gets more attention for his antics on and off the court than from any success on it, has once again proclaimed himself the spokesperson for what is right and wrong in tennis. The focus of his ridicule continues to be Novak Djokovic who has provided him with plenty of ammunition of late it must be said.
Djokovic has made headlines for all the wrong reasons by hosting a charity tennis event in his home town in Serbia, flagrantly ignoring social distancing protocols resulting in himself and several others testing positive for Covid-19 in the process.
"Don't @ me for anything I've done that has been 'irresponsible' or classified as 'stupidity' - this takes the cake," tweeted Kyrgios before following up with "Boneheaded decision to go ahead with the 'exhibition' speedy recovery fellas, but that's what happens when you disregard all protocols."
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Djokovic rightly deserves criticism for his actions but that criticism doesn't need to come from someone with zero credibility such as Kyrgios. Kyrgios represents all that is bad about sports - wasted talent because he is too lazy to practice but always has plenty of energy to disrespect everyone else associated with tennis including match officials, fellow pros, coaches, ball boys/girls and fans.
SEVEN MORE PAKISTANI PLAYERS TEST POSITIVE BUT TOUR STILL ON
No less than seven more Pakistani cricketers have tested positive for Covid-19 this week bringing the team total to 10 but their chief executive still insists their summer tour of England will go ahead. "Will this be the first ever five-a-side Test series?" you might be forgiven for asking, or "how big is the Pakistan squad??" The good news is that the first test only starts on 4 August and that most of the infected players are in the white-ball team and not the Test team. "Only" one member of the Test team has tested positive so far.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: England should start making plans for a replacement series as there is a high risk of this virus spreading further into the team and coaches. Surely the same coaches for the one-day team would have been in contact with test team players? Watch this space.
