Dark Season 3: Everything you need to know about the show's final instalment

From its release date to the returning cast members, here's everything you can expect from the last leg of the German sci-fi series

The mind-bending German thriller series, Dark, is all set to return to our screens for a third season on June 27, 2020. Want to know a fun fact? Netflix coincided the release date with the plot of the show, even though the streaming service typically releases series on Fridays, as June 27 (which happens to be a Saturday) marks the date of the last cycle, and the apocalypse, according to the script. Fans won't be surprised to know that Dark Season 3 will be the final instalment of the show, given that the time cycles on the show take place in threes.

Created by German filmmakers Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Dark, which has often been called ‘the Stranger Things for grown-ups’, is a sci-fi, time-travelling thriller with a supernatural twist. The story revolves around the disappearance of two young children, which in turn exposes the stories of four interconnected families in the small German town of Winden.

Showrunner Baran bo Odar had already given us the green light for a third season of the show ahead of the premiere of Dark's second season in May 2019, saying, "It's official! We are working on Dark Season 3. It is the final cycle of this great journey. We always had three seasons in mind when we developed Dark." On May 26, Netflix dropped the official trailer for the show’s final instalment with the caption, “The end is the beginning. And the beginning is the end. Dark comes full circle on June 27th.”

But what can fans expect from the final season of Dark? The unexpected, to put it simply. The show, which touches on topics like free will and the relationship between good and evil, aims to tie all the loose strings from seasons 1 and 2 together. “The basic idea of Season 3 was something that we already had when we started,” Friese revealed in an interview. "There are also a lot of things in Season 1 hinting to Season 3. Also, we actually thought about putting some of the stuff that’s now in Season 3 into Season 2, but then decided to move it backwards. So basically now everything that’s left just falls into Season 3." Sounds tricky given all the dimensions and sub-plots in the script, but also like a promising watch full of unexpected twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, many of the regulars from the cast are expected to return for the final season, including Louis Hofmann as the young Jonas Kahnwald, Jordis Triebel as Katharina Nielsen, Lisa Vicari as Martha Nielsen, Mark Waschke as Noah, Andreas Pietschmann as older Jonas, and Lea van Acken as the unnamed girl from the future. We can also expect some new faces in this instalment including Nina Kronjager, Barbara Nusse, Jakob Diehl, Hans Diehl, Axel Werner, and Sammy Scheuritzel.
