Illustration used for representational purposeLUDHIANA: A man allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance after slitting his wife's throat following a verbal spat in Gurdev Nagar area in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The man was rushed to Ludhiana Civil Hospital from where he was referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala where he breathed his last.
The deceased are identified as Mukesh Kumar (38) and his wife Jyoti (28). The couple were living in a house in Gurdev Nagar as a caretaker with three children. This was Mukesh’s second marriage. He has a 17-year-old son from his first marriage, a six-year-old son and a seven-month-old daughter from his second marriage.
Assistant commissioner of police- Civil Lines, Jatinder Singh said that, according to eldest son of Mukesh, his father was an acute drinker. He would often drink and fight with Jyoti. Jyoti wanted him to quit drinking and this was the reason for their strain relationship. On Tuesday night at around 8pm, the teenaged son returned from the factory where he works as a labourer. After dinner he fell asleep. The family used to sleep in the veranda. While the children were sleeping, the couple had some fight.
“The man then slit the throat of Jyoti using a sickle. Thereafter, he also consumed some poisonous substance. Due to the loud noise of the pedestal fan, nobody could hear their noises. However, when Mukesh tried to escape from the spot with his daughter, a woman, who also lives in the same house with her family, saw Mukesh leaving the house with his daughter. She asked Mukesh why he was going out with the toddler so late. However, Mukesh did not reply and returned. Thereafter, Guddi noticed that Jyoti was lying dead in the pool of blood. She raised an alarm and called police” added ACP.
On getting information, the police reached on spot. Meanwhile Mukesh had become unconscious and was rushed to hospital.
Further Sub inspector Richa Rani, SHO at police station Division number 5 said that, the police had already registered a case against Mukesh in the night. However, he died while undergoing treatment in Rajindera hospital, Patiala. The murder weapon has also been recovered from the spot.
