Amit Agarwal who was a chartered accountant by profession killed his wife in Bengaluru and his mother-in-law in an apartment in Kolkata’s Kankurgachi area following which he shot himself dead. On June 23, the police had found a 67- page suicide note in his bag where he mentioned about all the murders that he had planned in order to kill his wife’s entire family members including his brother-in-law and father-in-law. Police also identified a magazine for the firearm with which he executed the killings.

On Monday, the 42 year-old took a morning flight to Kolkata from Bangalore along with his ten year-old son after he murdered his wife, Shilpi Agarwal who was also a chartered accountant, in her apartment in Bengaluru. He told his son that his mother has already flown to Kolkata and therefore they need to go. He was going through a troubled marriage with his wife and a divorce file was going on between them. When he reached Kolkata, Amit handed over the kid to his brother and requested him to drop his son to his residential building in North Kolkata following which, he went to his in-laws house which is located in Kankurgachi and falls under the supervision of the Phoolbagan police station.

He broke into their house and shot his 65 year-old mother-in-law, Lalita Dhandania first and then he tried to shoot his 70 year-old father-in-law, Subhash Dhandania  as well but he missed the shot and Subhash  somehow escaped and ran out of his house, locking the house door from outside. After hours, another fire was heard where he killed himself.

Soon after this, the father-in-law rushed to the police station. The senior official stated, “When officers reached the spot, they saw that the mother-in-law was shot dead in her room and she was lying in a pool of blood. Agarwal was lying on the bed itself after shooting himself and the firearm he was carrying - an improvised pistol was lying on the ground. There was a misfire where a shot was fired at the door. It was aimed at his father-in-law, however he escaped.”

The Kolkata police department is investigating the case and trying to find out how he bought the pistol. “We are investigating where he got the pistol from, as the cab driver told us that he didn’t stop anywhere enroute,” a senior official said. He also stated that they are trying to contact the airport authorities to review the CCTV footage.

Two pistols were recovered by the police from which Amit fired the three bullets.

Hindustan Times quoted a police officer as saying, “From the suicide note, we came to know that he wanted to kill his brother-in-law too, who stays at Gurugram. He had called him to Kolkata but he didn’t come and was therefore saved. In his suicide note, Agarwal had repeatedly accused his wife and in-laws. The entire 67-page note was typed barring one page which was handwritten and might have been added later.” 

Subhash tried to call his daughter but was unable to reach her. After police found the suicide note, they suspected that Shilpi was murdered by Amit. They tried to contact her but it was switched off. Soon after which, DCP Whitefield, Bangalore police was asked by the Kolkata police to investigate the case. Bangalore police later recovered Shilpi’s body and informed them that she was strangled to death.  Amit’s laptop was seized by the police where they found that he used to watch videos of how to use firearms.

“From the note, it was clear that he was planning it for a long time. The child is in safe custody now. We have spoken to him once. All the family members are in a state of shock,” another official was quoted as saying.
