CHENNAI: After Madurai and its neighbouring districts, the
Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday announced a complete lockdown in Theni district till the end of the month, as the State reported the highest ever number of cases as 2865 people tested positive for the infection.
Four other districts in the State have been under a complete lockdown since Friday. These districts include state capital
Chennai and neighbouring districts like
Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and
Thiruvallur.
With the fresh cases on Wednesday, Tamil Nadu's Covid-19 count touched . The State's total tally stands at 67,468 and with 33 more deaths, the death toll has risen to 866, the media bulletin confirmed.
This is the eighth consecutive day that
Tamil Nadu has reported more than 2,000 fresh cases of the infection.
A total of 37,763 patients have been discharged in all with 2424 patients recovering on Wednesday, the bulletin added.
Chennai continues to be the worst-hit district with 1654 fresh cases in the state capital on Wednesday taking the number of cases in the city to 45,814 with 668 deaths.
Chengalpet reported the second highest number of cases on Wednesday with 131 cases.
According to the media bulletin, 29,655 people were tested on Wednesday and over 9.4 lakh samples have been tested till date.
On last Saturday, the state tested 33,231 samples, which is the highest number of Covid-19 tests conducted in a single day in Tamil Nadu.
