SURAT: Two days after an attack on a woman bank employee inside bank premises in Surat, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday spoke to concerned officials, including the police commissioner, to ensure the safety of workers and timely action into the matter.
Viral video of a constable from city police hitting a woman bank employee inside bank premises had sparked outrage on social media on Tuesday.

The cop was booked in Puna police station for assaulting the woman on Sunday soon after the incident.

Police booked Ghanshyam Shyor for causing hurt and criminal intimidation. The complaint was lodged by Harshad Tiwari, an employee of Canara Bank branch in Saroli area. Police are yet to make any arrest in the case.

The accused cop entered into an argument with Tiwari over refusal to print entry in bank passbook. The bank employee told the cop that the printer was not working due to which the entry could not be made. Harshad's colleague Santosh Kumari started recording the scene of unruly behaviour of the cop on her mobile phone. Agitated over video shooting, the cop entered in the restricted area and hit the woman employee.

Santosh suffered injuries on the face and other parts of the body.
City police commissioner R B Brahmbhatt suspended the cop after the video went viral. Union minister of finance Nirmala Sitharaman also tweeted, "Spoke to Dr Dhaval Patel, Collector, Surat, on the incident of a lady staff of a Bank being assaulted in the premises. Although currently on leave, he assured me that timely action will be taken on the FIR filed late night."
"The police constable has been detained and he will be arrested after an investigation," said V U Gadariya, police inspector, Puna police station.
"The constable has been suspended and strict actions will be taken against him," said Brahmbhatt
