Decision on pending CBSE Board papers 'very shortly': Centre to SC

NEW DELHI: Seeking a day's time to decide on whether to conduct the pending Board exams, the Centre and CBSE told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that an expert body is weighing the various options in view of the rising Covid-19 and a final decision is expected "very shortly".
As solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and CBSE, sought some time from the bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna, hearing the the plea of a group of parents seeking scrapping of the exams due to the pandemic, the court posted the hearing for Thursday and asked the government to take an informed decision by then. The court also asked the Centre to take a call on scrapping of exams conducted by ICSE Board, after ICSE told the SC that it will go by the government's decision.

While CBSE officials refused to make any statement as the matter is sub judice, sources said there is likelihood of the exams being cancelled in view of the rising number of infections across the country. TOI had first reported that the Board is deliberating on scrapping the papers.
The CBSE had scheduled to hold the pending 29 papers of Class 12 Boards from July 1-15 along with six papers of Class X for the northeast district of Delhi where exams could not be held in February due to the riots. A senior HRD ministry official said the Board had kept all options open.
