The Sikkim government has deployed Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel in villages located in the east and north Sikkim near the borders of the two countries amidst the ongoing standoff between China and India in the Galvan Valley. This information was given by a senior police officer on Tuesday.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Range, Pravin Gurung told reporters that armed IRB personnel has been deployed since last week on the instructions of the state government. However, he declined to give the number of IRB personnel deployed.

Gurung said that on the orders of the state government, IRB personnel have been deployed in villages near Lachen, Lachung, and Thangu in North Sikkim and at Kupup and Sherthang in East Sikkim. The DIG said that there is a large population of citizens in these villages and they are very close to the international border.

Are located close.

Gurung said that 'deployment of armed state police personnel in border villages is a regular practice'. He said that 'there is tension between the two countries and Sikkim is also a sensitive border state.'

Gurung stated that ‘whenever there is tension in the border areas it is a protocol to provide backup to the army.’ The Sikkim government did not deploy IRB personnel in the border villages even during the 2017 Doklam standoff.

About this, Gurung said that IRB personnel were not deployed at that time because only a small part of a very inaccessible place in Sikkim was involved in the Doklam standoff.
