Proposal to install traffic lights to reduce snarls at Ludhiana's internal chowks

LUDHIANA: In order to solve the problem of traffic jams in the internal chowks of city the civic officials have proposed installation of traffic lights. The proposal will be kept in the finance and contracts committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday. The officials claimed that at these internal chowks there is much traffic pressure and people face tough time.
A bottleneck is created at these points. The proposal has been prepared for the chowks like Raikhy Cinema Chowk, Mata Rani Chowk, Subhani Building Chowk and Kochar Market chowk. The traffic problem at these chowks were discussed in a meeting taken by cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu with civic officials and traffic cops. In that meeting solutions to get rid of traffic jams were discussed and then it was decided to install traffic system.
For Mata Rani Chowk traffic coming from Lakkar Bridge and from Damoria Bridge merges and ruckus is created during peak hours. Sometimes traffic cops are there for monitoring the traffic but sometimes people are left in lurch. Similarly at Raikhy Cinema Chowk due to auto rickshaws traffic remains disturbed. In Subhani Building chowk too traffic merges from Field Ganj, CMC and other internal roads of the city.
A commuter Sham Lal said, “The internal chowks also need attention of civic body because traffic creates major problems there especially during peak hours. Moreover, the lanes are narrow inside market and chowks so traffic signals will help in easing out the traffic.”
Another commuter Gurdeep Singh said at Mata Rani Chowk, Subhani Building and Raikhy Cinema chowk it takes long to reach destinations. He said apart from traffic signals the authorities should think some other ways as well.
Meanwhile the officials claimed that in the coming days they will start anti encroachment drive in the internal markets of the city. The civic officials and police will run this drive jointly so that traffic problems could be resolved. Earlier also drive was carried out but due to lockdown the process was stopped in between. And now it will pick the pace again.
The officials will also put a proposal of giving maintenance of 28 other traffic signals already installed at various locations. The members will take final decision on Wednesday.
