SWANSEA – The one-day, low-budget campaign succeeded.

Longtime resident Edward Hill won the available seat on the Community Preservation Committee via write-in vote in the annual Town Election on Monday night.

No one had submitted candidacy papers for the position; 127 write-in votes were cast. Hill received 32 of them. Joshua Robinson was second with 11.  The CPC race was the only one on the ballot whose unofficial results were unavailable on Monday night.

Town Clerk Danielle Pelland called Hill on Tuesday called Hill with news of his victory.

“Hard to believe!” Hill wrote in an email to The Herald News. “I forgot to tell anyone I was interested in this vacant position.”

Hill employed an eight-hour, mark-and-park campaign. He marked up his van windows to indicate he was a write-in candidate for the CPC and parked the van at Joseph Case High School where voting was held from noon to 8 p.m.

Noting he had helped to get the Community Preservation Act passed in town, Hill said he’s now “so excited to finally participate in spending the funds on open space, historical, recreation and affordable housing.”

A veteran of 40 years in the workforce development field, Hill is a former Diman Regional School Committee member who has also been selected to fill one-year Swansea vacancies on the Housing Authority, Recreation Commission and and School Committee.
