PSL's long road back to the field remains unclear after 100 days without live action

Despite projections that the accelerating rate of new infections will only reach its peak in mid-July to September, restrictions have been eased with the country now on day 88 of a national lockdown.

The South African Football Association (SAFA), alongside the PSL, have set out in an effort to facilitate the safe return of local soccer, but it is beginning to look an increasingly tall order.

A Joint Liaison Committee (JLC) including members from both football associations was assembled on 12 May with the task of formulating protocols for the safe return of football.

Mkhize: There are lots of comorbidities which increase the risk of Covid-19 patients. We are taking the role of comorbidities in individual deaths into account. Our teams are working on how we standardize the release of death results.

7h ago

Mkhize: Dexamethasone has been used for a number of years. We are excited to source Dexamethasone at the stage when patients are on ventilators. It only works for people who are on ventilators or on oxygen and does not mean people can neglect precautions.

7h ago

Mkhize: We have the formula to be able to reduce the pandemic and this is what we must continue doing. The kind of reluctance to take up quarantine must be addressed. There are people not following on the message of social distancing and masks.

8h ago

As we looked at the different parts of the country we have been able to implement a strategy to effectively deal with each area. We then resolved to embark on what is called the differentiated approach, says Mkhize.

He says now that we have reduced the restrictions and started opening up, we are seeing that the numbers have started to increase. We are moving towards a devastating and decimating storm.

8h ago

It is possible to defeat this scourge. It is important to understand this is a dangerous pandemic. We have been able to identify low transmission areas and hotspots, says Mkhize.

8h ago

Mkhize: As it stands, South Africa has 2 888 patients who are in isolation in general ward, 262 patients who are in high care, 539 patients who are in ICU, 218 patients who are on ventilators and 566 patients who are on oxygen.

8h ago

Mkhize: The models are theoretical. Whatever the models are, it is not the models that determine where we end up, it is our own conduct and determination to fight the pandemic that lends us to the situation we find ourselves in.

OPINION | Standing with refugees during these challenging times

This 20th World Refugee Day is commemorated under extremely tough conditions. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, refugees and asylum seekers around the world struggled to obtain official recognition, open bank accounts, register their children for school, earn a living, and avoid xenophobic discrimination and violence. Covid-19 has made a challenging situation unbearable for many who already struggle to secure income, food, and basic shelter.

Dodging questions: Dlamini-Zuma does not have the reasons a state of disaster was declared available

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma does not have the reasons why the Covid-19 pandemic was declared a national disaster available.

The "scientific rationale" relied on to ban the sale of tobacco products is also not available, nor the reasons why alcohol sales are allowed under Level 3 lockdown.

This according to Dlamini-Zuma's recent written replies to questions posed by opposition MPs which were published in the past week.
