The COVID-19 mortality rate in Chennai is steadily increasing, going up to 1.47 per cent as on Monday morning. After hovering around 0.7-0.8 per cent, it had gone up to 1 per cent 10 days ago, which further went up in the last few days due to the spike in deaths.
Chennai: As on June 19, the city had recorded 501 deaths, which spiralled to 623 by Monday morning – an increase of 122 virus fatalities in just four days as per the bulletin released on Monday evening (including cross notified cases).
Among the 15 zones in Greater Chennai Corporation, Royapuram recorded the highest number of deaths of 109 as of Monday morning. This is more than double of the 52 deaths that the zone had recorded till June 12.
In Teynampet zone, 82 patients have died (37 on June 12), while the fatality figure is 80 in Tondiarpet zone (up from 43 on June 12). Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Anna Nagar zones have recorded 73 and 55 deaths respectively.
These zonal figures do not include the deaths recorded in Monday’s bulletin, and is thus set to go up by 22 after the numbers are collated and notified to particular zone.
Despite having the highest number of cases and deaths, the civic body removed all the containment zones in Royapuram zone. As per the list released by the civic body on Monday, the zone does not have a single containment, whereas Tondiarpet zone has 24 containment areas. Overall, the city has 61 containment zones. As per the protocol followed by the civic body, a street will be declared containment zone only if more than five index cases are reported from there.
Overall, 41,172 persons have confirmed positive for the virus in the city, of which 17,683 cases are active ones. Around 55.85 per cent of the patients (22,887 persons) have recovered so far.
Meanwhile, Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said that the civic body has procured 10,000 infrared thermal scanners and handed over them to door-to-door survey workers. “The survey workers will identify fever cases using new devices. Also, we have given pulse oxymeters to Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zones,” he added.
