The mother of a teenager whose alleged crime spree was stopped in its tracks by a group of residents has said she is glad her son was caught and pinned to the ground.

Three boys, two aged 13 and the other 14 years old, allegedly tried to break into six cars at Logan Reserve in south Brisbane at about 12.15am on Friday.

A group of eight fed-up locals - four of them carrying baseball bats - sprang into action after an alert was raised in the community's Facebook group, pinning the accused car thieves to the ground while they waited for police.

Officers allegedly found stolen wallets and a watch when they searched the boys, before releasing them without charge. Queensland Police are still investigating.

Posting anonymously through the Crime Watch Logan Facebook page, one of the boys' mothers said she had thought her son was asleep at the the time of the alleged spree.

'He has never been in trouble before and the other two boys came to my house to get him out,' she said.

'I’m beside myself questioning myself. He is going to be punished at home. I’m all for the fact he got a hiding etc - hey if it was my car I would do the same.

'But please note he has never been in trouble he’s normally a good kid and won’t see day light in a long time. Sorry to everyone in that estate.'

One resident who caught the boys, Henry Stowers, told 9News he had approached the teenagers after they had jumped a fence, but did not use his bat and only brought it as a warning.

'I was just playing a bit of Fortnite with my little cousins and then at midnight the page went off,' he said.

'I walked up to them with the bat, they went straight to ground with their hands in the air,' Mr Stowers said.

Mr Stowers said he did not use the metal bat on the boys and only brought it as a precaution.

'They feared for their life, they started shaking and said they were never going to do this again. I guess if you saw eight boys around you you'd do the same thing,' he explained.

Mr Stowers said the teenagers fell from the fence, causing one boy to suffer cuts and giving another minor bruises.
