Delhi violence: Pregnant Jamia student Safoora Zargar gets bail.

Safoora Zargar gets bail: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to pregnant Jamia Miliia Islamia student Safoora Zargar. Safoora was arrested by the police for her role in the Delhi violence case. The court granted bail to Safoora after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta did not oppose it on humanitarian ground.

At the outset of the hearing, Mehta, representing Delhi Police, submitted that Zargar can be released on regular bail on humanitarian grounds and the decision has not been taken on merits of the case and should not be made a precedent.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher, who conducted the hearing through video conferencing, granted bail to Zargar, who is 23-week pregnant. The court asked Zargar to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of like amount.

Justice Rajiv also asked her not to indulge in any activity for which she has been charged with. Besides, it asked her not to hamper the investigation or influence the witnesses, a PTI report said.

The Jamia students arrested under the UAPA in a case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in February. The 27-year-old was arrested by the Special Cell on April 10.

Earlier on Monday, Delhi Police had opposed the plea by the Jamia Coordination Committee’s media coordinator in the High Court saying Safoora Zargar’s pregnancy cannot be grounds to grant her bail. The police had made the submission in the status report filed by counsels Amit Mahajan and Rajat Nair before Justice Rajiv Shakdher.
