Woman Borrows Friend’s Car, Gets Caught In Scary Standoff As It Was Reported Stolen

Imagine borrowing a friend’s car, only to find yourself getting pulled over and having an officer pull his gun.

That would be pretty terrifying, but that’s exactly what happened to 23-year-old Joneshia Wilkerson.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the incident occurred on Thursday when an officer pulled Wilkerson over after the car she was driving came up as stolen.

As you can see in the officer’s body cam video, he instructs Wilkerson not to move and says the “car’s coming back stolen.” He repeats that multiple times while pointing his gun at the ground.

The situation drags on for a bit, until back up arrives. When it does, the driver and passenger are placed in handcuffs while police try to figure out the story behind the car.

NBC News reports Wilkerson had just returned from deployment with the U.S. Army and had borrowed the car from a friend. However, unbeknownst to her, the Nissan Altima was reported stolen by Hertz.

Wilkerson eventually told police the friend she borrowed the car from bought rental vehicles and that appears to have diffused the situation as she and her passenger were released. The department added the stolen vehicle was impounded and neither Wilkerson nor her passenger were charged.

So what caused all this? Wilkerson told the Tampa Bay Times “her understanding now” is that her friend was financing the car and stopped paying for it. This presumably caused Hertz to report it as stolen and this eventually led to Wilkerson getting pulled over.

Wilkerson is still upset about what happened and told NBC, “I feel like something needs to happen to the Tampa PD officer who held that gun on me for four minutes. The Tampa PD, they are bullies, and the way they treat people is bad.”
