Snap Shot: Max gives Dees wings with pre-game ritual

Snap Shot is a weekly column taking a look at the lighter side of football.

Melbourne skipper Max Gawn hasn't let the title of captain go to his head.

He's reserving that for the can of Red Bull he consumes before each match to give him wings.

The lovable Gawn – a genuinely funny man – has found another way to keep spirits (or should we say energy) high among his teammates throughout this mad year.

First there was the Max Gawn Easter Pack that he sent to teammates that contained a six pack and a book and a few other choice items when the group was separated; then came the blond mohawk when he returned to training.

Now he's added a harmless pre-game ritual to get himself and his teammates up and about.

Big Max has decided to shotgun a can of Red Bull before each match in the locker area, a pre-game ritual that puts a smile on the faces of those in the vicinity.

It's worked since the shutdown, too, because the Demons kicked the first seven goals to set up the win against Carlton. And while the result was never in doubt on Sunday, given they were playing an intra-club match, Gawn's early tap to Christian Petracca at a forward stoppage that resulted in a goal showed he was on early.

Snap Shot hopes 'ShotGawn' Max – the three-time All-Australian and dual best and fairest – never changes his style.

More than a year has now passed since Brad Scott departed after 211 games as North Melbourne coach with a winning record just over 50 per cent.

He was popular with his players and an excellent coach, but many Kangaroos' supporters became frustrated late in Scott's tenure about some selection decisions, particularly an apparent trend towards dropping the same players each week when others who were battling kept getting games.

It led to a memorable post-match exchange with AFL media's Marc McGowan after round three last year when Scott responded to a McGowan question with: "Do we want me to put someone's head on a platter for you? I'm not going to do that."

Athough Snap Shot guesses Scott's decisions were sound, there is no doubt North supporters were frustrated at the time with his apparent reluctance to play former Giant Paul Ahern.

So an unexpected reminder didn't escape our attention last week when the North Melbourne teams were named.

100 up, and Caird is yet to raise the white flag

Here's some good news in these troubled times: former VFL/AFL goal umpire Roly Caird turned 100 on Tuesday.

Born at Albert Park Hospital, he took up umpiring years after his footy career ended when he hurt his shoulder playing his one and only game with Fitzroy seconds in 1944.

But it didn't stop him waving the flags as he umpired his first match in round one, 1955 at Princes Park when Carlton thrashed North Melbourne.

It was an inauspicious start, however, as Caird stepped into a pit used to water the ground on his way to verifying the scores in the middle of the ground post-match and hurt his wrist, a particularly bad injury for guitarists and goal umpires.

He rose through the ranks quickly, waving the flags in the 1959 grand final between Essendon and Melbourne that the Demons, led by Ron Barassi, won easily.

His 236-game VFL career ended in 1970's first semi, which was also South Melbourne champion Bob Skilton's only final.

Caird probably thought having turned 50 earlier that year, he'd better use what time he had left to pursue a few of his other interests, such as golf.

Fifty years later he celebrates the ton, a total that coaches have made hard for teams to reach these days when the flags are waved less regularly and umpires have to engage with video to do their job.

All clear, Roly.
