We have another important local election in Westport, June 23. Important board membership is up for grabs. I recently received, as almost all Westport residents did, a campaign flyer asking Westport voters to give four candidates our vote because "together we are strong." This includes the duo team running for Selectboard of Sherri Mahoney and Sam Mundel. They have joined with Bill Harkins and Manny Soares (Board of Health and Planning Board, respectively). Now perhaps Soares and Harkins are well qualified for running for their positions. However, I have never felt comfortable when a group of candidates band together as a political force to "give you (back) your town." I never knew we lost it in the first place!

Two of our incumbent Selectboard candidates, Steve Oulette and Brian Valcourt have been lifelong residents of Westport. They have consistently looked at all sides of an issue affecting Westport and voted for what is best for all of Westport. Sometimes I agreed with them and sometimes I did not, but I always admired their convictions for what they understood as beneficial for our town.

Hopefully Westport citizens will base their votes, June 23, for experience and independent decision-making.
