Maharashtra continues to be the worst state after COVID-19 cases are surging with a rapid speed. Maharashtra Police which are frontline workers in the pandemic continues to be hit by the infection.

Over 55 police personnel of Maharashtra tested coronavirus positive in the past 24 hours, the tally of the cops contracted with the novel virus has jumped to 4,103 on Monday. Meanwhile, nearly 48 police personnel have lost their lives amid the virus in the state.

Maharashtra Police on Monday said, "In the last 24 hours, 55 policemen in Maharashtra were found corona positive. So far, 48 policemen have died due to coronavirus in Maharashtra. The number of coronavirus positive policemen in Maharashtra has reached 4,103, including 1,016 active cases.” On the positive front, 3,039 cops have recovered from the infection and returned to their homes, police added.

The first demise of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel due to the COVID-19 was reported in Mumbai. The SRPF personnel, posted at Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai, succumbed to death on Sunday.

With many police personnel testing positive for the contagion, the state had requested for companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) from the central government to give some relief to the state police force. However, over 32 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force have already been positioned in Maharashtra. 

In view of increasing fatalities, the Maharashtra police have also asked their officers who are above 55 years of age to go on leave as a safety measure. Besides, cops in the age group of 50 to 55 have been put on low-risk normal duty.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state in the country with 1,32,075 coronavirus cases and 6,170 deaths, as per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
