While COVID-19 cases continue to rise in surrounding areas, Chandor village is treading with caution to prevent spread of the virus in the village and will go on a voluntary lockdown for five days.

Chandor sarpanch Edward D’silva informed, “We had started taking precautions almost a month back and had banned ‘outsiders’ mostly migrants coming from other parts from carrying out trade in the village.”

He said that a large number of traders would turn up in the village especially on Wednesdays and Sundays and the panchayat appealed to the people of the village to make do with what is available with local traders.

He said that while cases spiralled in Curtorim, Quepem and surrounding areas, Chandor has by and large remained safe. He said that the public have also come forward asking the panchayat to go on lockdown to break the chain of infection in case the infection spreads.

Accordingly the panchayat has decided to keep the market complex closed from June 23 to June 27 as most of the vendors are from Curtorim which is one of the infected areas and there is every likelihood of community transmission.

He further stated that the panchayat will carry out sanitisation of the market complex and sought support from the villagers to keep the village free from the virus.
