AHMEDABAD: Gujarat hit a new high in 24 hours ending 5 pm on Sunday with 580 new cases of Covid-19 – 24 cases every hour sending the case tally soaring to 27,317. The state also recorded deaths of 25 Covid-19 patients and discharge of 655 patients – taking the toll to 1,664 and total discharges to 19,357.
It’s the fifth time in June that the highest daily cases got revised for Gujarat. Surat recorded its highest tally at 176 whereas for Ahmedabad district, it was the lowest daily tally in the past 23 days. Vadodara recorded 41 cases, followed by 15 in Gandhinagar and 10 in Bharuch.
Out of 25 deaths, 20 were recorded from Ahmedabad, three from Surat and one each from Aravalli and Chhota Udepur. The discharges included 427 from Ahmedabad, 131 from Surat, 40 from Vadodara and 15 from Gandhinagar.
With the update on Sunday, the state now has 23% (6,296) active cases – 70.9% of the patients have got discharged whereas 6.1% have succumbed to the infection.
Death rate 5% last weekAnalysis of the weekly figures in June – which has now recorded 10,523 or 38.5% of total cases in 21 days at the average of 501 daily cases and 626 deaths or 37.6% of total deaths at the average of 30 deaths daily – shows that out of three weeks, the last week recorded the lowest deaths (186) and highest cases (3727).
However, compared to the death rate of 6.39 and 6.56 out of 100 positive cases, the last week between June 15 and 21 recorded a death rate of 5%. Experts said that the phenomenon could be explained with the rise of positive cases as the average number of daily cases were 532.
Gujarat carried out 5460 tests in 24 hours, taking the total to 3.24 lakh. A total of 2.23 lakh persons are under quarantine in Gujarat out of which 2.19 lakh are under home quarantine.
