Varanasi DM takes stock of flood preparedness

Intermittent rain resulted in water logging in many city areas on Saturday
VARANASI: The district administration has geared up with all preparations to deal with flood as the water level continues to rise in Ganga. With the district receiving heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day, the water level of Ganga recorded a rise of .22 mt in the last 24 hours. According to the daily flood bulletin of Central Water Commission, the river was flowing at a mark of 60.07mt on Saturday.
District Magistrate, Kaushal Raj Sharma, held a meeting of officials to draw a work plan for the flood situation. The officials were directed to ensure the availability of food grains and community kitchens near relief camps for the flood affected people. He also instructed to activate the flood control room for effective monitoring of the situation.
The DM asked the lekhpals to stay in villages for next two months. Other arrangements like availability of boats and divers were also discussed. The SDMs were asked to depute staff at flood outposts and NDRF and PAC personnel were also asked to complete their preparedness for the flood situation. Meanwhile, the city witnessed intermittent rain throughout the day that caused water logging in almost all localities. Many roads also remained waterlogged for long time due to the poor drainage system.
